In 2014, we launched our ‘layered’ acting program, which allowed us to add both professional mentor actors and a Junior Company to our cast. This Junior Company was launched with the intention of creating a space where folks ages 13-18 who are passionate about theatre would be able to receive mentorship, build performance skills, and become a part of our community!
In that first season, the Junior Company had just two members. This year, it has expanded to include seven young artists who are passionate about theatre: Alexander, Eli, Kaden, Asa, Olivia, Mackenzie, and Grace!
Last week, I sat down with each of our Junior Company members to find out how they are feeling about their time with the GVSF.
Here is a snippet of what Mackenzie and Asa had to say:
Mackenzie: “My favourite thing about working with the Festival has been building relationships with all these wonderful Shakespeare fanatics like me. I like to see how people who have been performing a lot longer than me work when they’re reading a new play, and what their techniques are; I really admire the patience and skill that they all put into it.”
Asa: “Something that’s really been great for me is to be able to work with a Shakespearean text over such a long period of time, and to learn to really understand it, and see all the beauty in the lines that we are saying. There are such great lines in Julius Caesar, I love it!”
We are so happy that these young artists are enjoying their time with the GVSF, because we certainly enjoy having them on stage with us! You can watch the full interview below to find out what the rest of them had to say.
